Avoiding Mercury in Small-Scale Gold Mining

The Global Environment Facility – Global Opportunities for Long-term Development of Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining Sector: Integrated Sound Management of Mercury in Indonesia’s ASGM (GOLD-ISMIA) is a project initiated by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with Kementrian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan (KLHK) and Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi (BPPT) to support small-scale gold mining operations in Indonesia to avoid the use of mercury.

To support the project goal, the GOLD-ISMIA team developed a mobile application and a web-based data portal that can monitor mercury avoidance systematically and regularly. This mobile application enables the project team to collect data from each gold processing owner at each location on a daily basis. The web portal helps the project team estimate the total amount of mercury avoided from a given location or area.

How Dihardja Software Helps

The biggest concern with the mobile app was identifying the user who would be willing to use it and the technology readiness in remote gold mining areas. To learn about the challenges firsthand, our team visited two gold mining sites in Minahasa Utara.

Based on the field visit result, we designed an interface that is simple to use for less technology-savvy miners and incorporated a reward system to incentivize them. We also added an offline mode feature to help miners collect data and send it later when they have internet access. We also took input from the KLHK and BPPT team to design a web dashboard that they can easily access to get data for reporting.
